Officers

Kerry D. Bird, President

Kerry Bird is an enrolled member of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate of South Dakota and has Lumbee tribal heritage. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and holds a Masters of Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He is a former Development Officer at UNC Chapel Hill, a former President of the National Indian Education Association, served as the interim Executive Director for both Native Americans in Philanthropy and the National Native American AIDS Prevention Center, and previously worked for the N.C. Commission of Indian Affairs. Kerry lives in Raleigh.

Danny Bell, Vice President

Danny Bell is an enrolled member of the Lumbee tribe and has Coharie tribal heritage. He attended East Carolina College before being drafted by the Army. After years of service, he later retired from active duty with the National Guard. He worked for the N.C. Commission of Indian Affairs before retiring from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he maintained a focus on American Indian students, American Indian studies, and his passion for archaeology. He served for several years as a member of the State Advisory Council on Indian Education. He lives in Chapel Hill.

 

Gwen Locklear, Treasurer

Gwen Locklear is an enrolled member of the Lumbee tribe. She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina Pembroke and currently serves as the Coordinator of the Wake County Indian Education Program. She served as a member of the State Advisory Council on Indian Education. She is a storyteller and has demonstrated her craft at the American Indian Heritage Celebration at the N.C. Museum of History. Gwen lives in Garner.

 

Clarice Dial, Secretary

Clarice Dial is an enrolled member of the Lumbee tribe. She is a graduate of Wake Technical Community College. She is currently employed by the N.C. Department of Transportation. She serves on the board of directors for the N.C. Indian Housing Authority and as an advisor for the N.C. Native American Youth Organization. Clarice lives in Holly Springs.
